One major point of contention for reviewers was the ending. Joe Juba said that the ending scenes are "jarring" and "surprising", calling them "mildly disappointing as a resolution to this game, but much more disappointing in what they imply for any installments that lie ahead".[18] Tom Marks of IGN said that the game "raises a metric ton of questions that it doesn't deliver any semblance of answers to", referring to parts of the story as "Some Kingdom Hearts BS".[22] Jason Schreier of Kotaku said the ending causes the game to become "something else entirely" from a remake, elaborating that he found himself grappling with the consequence of the ending days after finishing the game and also likened it to Kingdom Hearts.

The group later encounters a creature chasing Hojo into an elevator, with the now freed Aerith preventing a fight as she calms the creature down. The creature reveals his ability to speak to everyone's shock. Tifa notices a XIII tattoo on the creature, who calls himself Red XIII. Cloud is stricken again, and stumbles towards the elevator, sensing that Jenova is close.

Aeris travels to the City of the Ancients, the lost city of the Cetra. Cloud is troubled Sephiroth was able to control him, but resolves to continue his journey as Tifa and Barret encourage him to go on.

He collapses and awakes in Aerith's old room in Hojo's lab, where she tells them about her Cetra heritage, but how Shinra is wrong about her being able to lead the company to the promised land. They get a video message from Wedge and Domino on Avalanche HQ coming to rescue them on a helicopter from the roof, with Barret being surprised as Wedge was supposed to be bedridden and he had never asked for Wedge to help bail them out.

Rather than using the character models and graphical style of Advent Children, which by that point had been developed using ten-year-old technology, the team decided to create new designs and models for characters: Nomura wished to balance the realism of Advent Children with cartoon stylization. Nomura was in charge of the revamped main character designs, while designer Roberto Ferrari was in charge of designs for secondary characters.

After I agree to meet up with Aerith not long after, for example, I see how my decision to spend a bit of time with her factors into a group conversation later on. I may have only gotten a small taste of the experience during my hands-on session, but from my time spent battling to talking to the characters, the emphasis on bonds is a constant highlight.

Sephiroth flees and the group chases him across the Mt. Nibel to Rocket Town where they meet Cid Highwind, an aeronautical engineer whose dreams of going into space had been dashed by Shinra's lack of funding.

The Whispers defeated and fate thus defied, the party, once back in reality, is free to advance toward a new unknown future. Aerith misses the steel sky, deeming the new sky ahead of them unknowable. As the party leaves Midgar to pursue Sephiroth to stop whatever his plan is, people back at the ruins of Sector 7 are rebuilding, Biggs is recuperating from the injuries he had sustained at the plate's fall, revealed to having survived, and Marlene thinks of Barret with Barret declaring that he will return to her.

The "Sephiroth" is revealed to be another cloaked man, who transforms into the Jenova Dreamweaver, a monster able to create illusions. Cloud, Tifa, and Aerith destroy it, and Barret is healed by one of the ghostly mysterious beings that have begun to fly all around the Shinra Building. Another "Sephiroth" appears and carries away Jenova's body that has been released from the tank, and the two fall off the building.

I designed these together with several other designers. Some of the posters look like they were intended to spread the influence of the Shinra company in public spaces, and there are also some more generic ones.

The group is freed from their cells by the surprise reappearance of the supposedly dead legendary SOLDIER, Sephiroth, following the escape of a headless Jenova from her tank.

Shinra had caught up with the pair on a precipice overlooking the Midgar Wasteland and Zack had been gunned down, but the soldiers had ignored the catatonic Cloud and left him for dead. Cloud had crawled over to Zack's body and taken his Buster Sword, then made his way to Midgar alone where he had wandered aimlessly before final fantasy 7 remake being discovered by Tifa at the Sector 7 slums train station.
